Grant gets the jump on Bond in a hedge maze and garrotes him to death with a wire concealed in his watch. As the garden lights up, it is revealed that this "Bond" is actually a man wearing a prosthetic mask--all part of a SPECTRE training exercise.

After the fake Bond falls dead, the estate lights up, and a man emerges with a stopwatch. "Exactly one minute fifty-two seconds," he announces. "That's excellent."

When he is first seen in the film, Kronsteen is engaged in a chess tournament against a Canadian grandmaster named MacAdams. After receiving a message from SPECTRE hidden on a coaster, he quickly finishes MacAdams off.

NUMBER 1: Siamese fighting fish. Fascinating creatures. Brave, but on the whole stupid. Yes, they're stupid. Except for the occasional one such as we have here. He lets the other two fight while he waits. Waits until the survivor is so exhausted that he cannot defend himself. And then, like SPECTRE, he strikes.

Kronsteen has devised a plot to steal a Lektor cryptographic device from the Russians and sell it back to them, while at the same time exacting revenge on MI6 agent James Bond for killing Dr. No.

Before she recruits Grant, Klebb punches him in the gut with brass knuckles. "He seems fit enough," she says when he barely acknowledges the attack.

Klebb recruits Grant as an assassin, and Tatiana Romanova, a cipher clerk at the Soviet consulate in Istanbul, as an unwitting pawn. Romanova thinks Klebb is still working for SMERSH.

Bond is picnicking with Sylvia in a punt (a flat-bottomed boat with a square-cut bow) with a bottle of Taittinger Blanc de Blancs chilling in the river when Miss Moneypenny calls him into headquarters. "I'll be there in an hour," he says initially, but Sylvia has other plans, unbuttoning the shirt he has just put on. "Make that an hour and a half," he says.

Q-Branch provides Bond with a special briefcase that contains a folding sniper rifle, ammunition, a knife and fifty gold sovereigns in secret compartments. In addition, there is a safety mechanism that will detonate a gas bomb if the briefcase is opened improperly.

When Miss Moneypenny gives 007 his ticket to Istanbul, she complains that she's never been and suggests that Bond should take her there someday.
