The team was established in Brooklyn, New York in 1883 and moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season.

In 1892, the city of Brooklyn began replacing its slow-moving, horse-drawn trolley lines with faster, more powerful electric trolley lines. In less than three years, electric trolley accidents in Brooklyn had resulted in more than 130 deaths and maimed well over 500 people. As a result, the term "Trolley Dodgers" was attached to the Brooklyn ballclub.

Koufax's career peaked with a run of six outstanding years from 1961 to 1966, before arthritis in his left elbow ended his career prematurely at age 30. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972 at the age of 36.

Robinson's character, his use of nonviolence, and his unquestionable talent challenged the traditional basis of racial segregation in professional baseball that had relegated black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s. He influenced the culture of and contributed significantly to the civil rights movement.

Scully is best known for his 67 seasons calling games for the Dodgers. His run constitutes the longest tenure of any broadcaster with a single team in professional sports history.

Late in the 1974 baseball season, after the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Houston Astros to win the National League pennant, Anita Martini lined up with male reporters to enter the Dodgers locker room. Predictably, she was refused access, but she asked to speak with Dodgers manager Walter Alston who allowed her to enter. Martini conducted interviews that day with Alston and with Dodgers players Steve Garvey and Jimmy Wynn.

The 1955 World Series matched the Brooklyn Dodgers against the New York Yankees, with the Dodgers winning the Series in seven games to capture their first championship.
