In October 1946, after selling his original company (Tōkai Seiki) to Toyota, Soichiro Honda founded the impressive-sounding Honda Technical Research Institute and began building motorized bicycles. The company was, in fact, little more than a wooden shack on a levelled bomb site on the outskirts of Hamamatsu.
