In post-war Germany, parts were generally in short supply, so the 356 automobile used components from the Volkswagen Beetle, including the engine case from its internal combustion engine, transmission, and several parts used in the suspension.
The Porsche 917 is considered one of the most iconic racing cars of all time.
It was originally designated the "Porsche 901", but French automobile manufacturer Peugeot protested on the grounds that in France it had exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. Instead of selling the new model with a different name in France, Porsche changed the name to 911.
Max Hoffman, the sole U.S. importer of Porsches, wanted a model name rather than just a number and got the factory to use the name "Continental". Ford Motor Company, makers of the Lincoln Continental, promptly sued.
Perhaps the most famous Porsche 550 was James Dean's, numbered 130 (VIN 550-0055), which crashed at the CA Rte. 46/41 Cholame Junction on September 30, 1955, resulting in Dean's tragic death.
