MOUSE TRIVIA

1) What part of a mouse never stops growing?

Like other rodents, mice have a set of incisor teeth that never stop growing. Their teeth grow at a rate of 0.3mm a day. Because of this, mice have to gnaw almost constantly to keep their teeth at a reasonable length.

2) Which mouse sense isn't very good?

Their eyesight is weak, but their other senses are highly acute.

3) How often do mice eat?

Despite their tiny bodies (and even smaller stomachs), mice eat between 15 and 20 meals a day. Because of their frequent eating habits, they prefer to build their homes near food sources.

4) How are mice different from hamsters and gerbils?

Hamsters and gerbils are notoriously bad swimmers. Mice, on the other hand, can swim and tread water for up to 3 days.

5) What is the average lifespan of mice in the wild?

In the wild, mice usually live only five months or so, mostly because of predators such as cats, snakes and foxes. In a lab setting, mice can live for up to two years.

6) What are newborn mice called?

Pinkies are newborn mice that have not yet grown fur.

7) What is the largest known litter of mice?

A mouse belonging to M. Ogilvie, of Blackpool, UK gave birth to a litter of 34 on the 12 February 1982, 33 of which survived.

8) What is the smallest mouse species?

The African pygmy is the smallest mouse on the planet. It measures 1.2 to 3.1 inches (3.04 to 7.874 cm) and can weigh less than .35 ounces (.01 kg).

9) What is a group of mice called?

Most wild mice are timid toward humans and other animals, but they are very social with other mice. A group of mice is called a nest or a colony.

10) How does the African spiny mouse escape predators?

All species of spiny mice are capable of autotomic release of skin upon being captured by a predator. To date, spiny mice are the only mammals known to do so. They can completely regenerate the autotomically released skin tissue, regrowing hair follicles, skin, sweat glands, fur and cartilage with little or no scarring.
