Fred and Wilma live in the Stone Age town of Bedrock, which serves as the county seat of Cobblestone County, and has a population of only 2,500 people (though it does swell to 30,000 in a dream sequence in the episode "Rip Van Flintstone").
According to Alan Reed, who provided Fred's voice from 1960 to 1977, the inspiration for "Yabba Dabba Doo!" came from his mother, who used to say, "A little dab'll do ya," a phrase probably borrowed from a Brylcreem commercial.
Barney and Betty Rubble, next-door neighbors and best friends to Fred and Wilma, often get involved in their misadventures.
Fred is employed as a bronto-crane operator at the Slate Rock and Gravel Company, along with Barney, who is also a bronto-crane operator.
Dino, the Flintstones' pet Snorkasaurus (sometimes called a dogasaurus), is loyal, protective, playful, and loves to knock Fred down and lick his face when he gets home from work.
According to the February 22, 1963, edition of TV Guide, Pebbles was born at the Bedrock Rockopedic Hospital on February 22, 10,000 B.C., although that particular year was never actually cited in the show itself. Most versions of the show put the Flintstones' era as circa 1,000,000 B.C.
Fred is generally considered the best bowler in Bedrock. In "Bowling Ballet", he goes so far as to take ballet lessons in order to improve his game, earning himself the nickname Fred "Twinkletoes" Flintstone.
The Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes has been around for quite some time, apparently since the days of Fred's forefathers, who hunted the mighty Water Buffaloes for which the organization is named.
When Fred loses his job, he coronates himself as the Gravelberry Pie King and starts selling Wilma's Gravelberry Pies to local businessman P.J. Safestone's supermarket chain. Things seem to be going well until Wilma calculates that they are actually losing money on every pie, so she sells Safestone the recipe instead.
