While in Vietnam, Dinah meets a little girl named Sin who had begun the harsh grooming process to become Lady Shiva's successor. Canary attempts to spare her that life by bringing her to the West, where Sin is taken in by the Birds of Prey who teach her English and give her the name Cynthia Lance. The League of Assassins frequently attempts to kidnap her.

Post-Flashpoint, Dinah Drake was born the child of a teenaged single mother and handed into foster care at the age of four. Considered a troublemaker, she moved from foster home to foster home and finally ran away at the age of ten. Taking to the streets of Gotham, she was caught dumpster-diving by Desmond Lamar, an ex-Special Forces agent and martial arts sensei, who took her in and offered her a job to clean his dojo after classes. In return, he would provide her with food and a safe place to sleep.

When her one-of-a-kind voice propelled Dinah onto the music scene as the lead singer of Black Canary, she tried to leave her past life behind, but the vigilante lifestyle isn't so easy to walk away from.
